The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! trade show is going on, which means the camera companies are announcing their new products. The one that excites me the most is the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It's kinda sorta the dream camera I've always wanted.
I'm a fan of cameras being as tiny as possible while still getting the job done. So I've had many different little bitty cameras over the years, starting with a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that took !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Remember APS film?
My dream camera is something that genuinely fits in a pocket, but has a big enough sensor to produce great low-light image quality and a fast enough lens to get some background blur. The Sony RX100 series has come the closest to being this ideal camera, with its 1" sensor, fast lens, and manual controls. But some control quirks, lack of a touchscreen, and high price kept me from pulling the trigger on one.
So along comes Canon, finally catching up to Sony with their own pocketable camera with a 1" sensor: the G7 X. The highlights:
Size almost dead even with the Sony RX100
20 megapixel 1" sensor
24-100mm equvalent f/1.8-2.8 lens
Manual controls aplenty
Wifi/NFC
3" tilting touchscreen
Basically, the G7 X (in theory) fixes all the issues that have kept me from buying an RX100 by having Canon's more-intuitive control logic and the touchscreen. The lens is more versatile than any of the RX100 variants, and wifi/NFC means quick sharing of snaps to my phone on the fly.
Oh yeah, I like it a lot. On paper. Now I just need to get a chance to play with one, and I'll likely be saying,

For me, if a camera doesn't have interchangeable lenses, I want to be able to stick it in a pocket. I don't see much value in a fixed lens camera that's the same size as a mirrorless. LX100 is kinda chunky.
